If your child has a physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioural, cognitive, emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, we can come up with a specific treatment plan to meet their individual needs. Some special need patients are very susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease or oral trauma. Others require medication or diet detrimental to dental health. As for other patients, dental problems for special need children can be prevented by early dental visit.

Special need children will benefit from the preventive approach as recommended for all patients – effective brushing and flossing, healthy diet, adequate fluoride. Regular professional cleanings, fluoride and sealant treatments are also very beneficial. Parents and caregivers are educated to provide individualized preventive oral health practices to reduce risk of oral disease in special need children.

Special need children require special care during dental treatment. Some patients need more support than a gentle, caring manner to feel comfortable during dental treatment. Mild sedation may benefit special patient. If extensive treatment is required, care will be provided under general anaesthetic at hospital.
